Students earning a degree in Journalism and Media Production will be prepared to join the many exciting and rapidly evolving careers in traditional and new media. Our courses balance conceptual understanding, critical thinking, ethical principles, and hands-on skill development. Our labs and studios include industry-standard equipment and software. Students with a passion for writing, reporting, creating, producing, learning, and presenting will have ample opportunities to develop their natural talents.

 

Broadcast News: Learn to film, write, report, anchor, and edit news content for television, radio, and online platforms. Career Options: television anchor; sports or entertainment broadcast reporter; digital content producer; radio reporter. 

 

Broadcast Production: Learn to produce, direct, and operate complex video equipment for multi-camera sports, news, music performances, and other reality-based programs in the studio or at large outdoor venues. Career options: Television or film producer; director; production management; film and video editor.

 

Multimedia Journalism: Learn about the news writing from features to sports and investigations, as well as how to produce online video and audio stories. Career options: Reporter; editor; magazine writer; photojournalist; digital content producer; podcaster.   

 

Media Innovation: Learn to build, promote and distribute content for mobile, web, and emerging media platforms to create effective products for organizations and audiences. Career options: News Producer, Media Researcher, Media technician, Media specialist, Manager of Technology.

 

Minor in Sport Communication: Learn how to communicate sports to mass media audiences with hands-on skills and a theoretical foundation. Develop a broad understanding of communication in sports contexts by understanding and applying concepts, principles, and tools necessary to generating positive dialogue in mass media. Learn how to construct a personal brand to enhance image in sport and entertainment, and how companies and sports organizations communicate and manage relationships with their fans, sponsors, and the media. 

Students completing a degree from the Department of Journalism and Media Production in the Edward R.
